Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and fiancé Nicolás Keenan are expecting their first child. The couple announced in a joint Instagram post on Monday that they will become parents in 2027.
For Jetten, who made history this year as the Netherlands’ first openly gay prime minister, the announcement adds another milestone to an already milestone-filled year.
“Someone very special is on the way. See you in 2027, little one,” the post stated in Dutch, Spanish, and English. “There are no words big enough to thank our egg donor, our surrogate mum Lisa and both their families. None of this would be possible without you.”
The post included a photo of the couple holding an ultrasound image and another showing them with Lisa, their surrogate. Their message also put the people helping them become parents at the center of the announcement. Alongside their anticipation of meeting their baby, Jetten and Kennan thanked the egg donor and Lisa, and extended that gratitude to their families.

Jetten, 38, made history earlier this year by becoming the first openly gay and youngest Prime Minister of the Netherlands. Jetten and Keenan have been engaged since November of 2024 but put marriage plans on hold while Jetten prepared to take office.
Jetten also brought his visibility as an openly gay world leader to New York last month. As The Advocate reported, he joined Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Sept. 24 at Manhattan’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, where they explored its LGBTQ+ archives and met young people who shared artwork they had created through its programs. Jetten was in town for the United Nations General Assembly and also visited the Stonewall Inn during the trip.
Discussing the importance of preserving LGBTQ+ history, Jetten emphasized “that so much work still has to be done all around the globe.”
His relationship with Keenan brings together two very public careers: national politics and international sports. Their social media posts offer glimpses of the life they share between those commitments, from cheering each other on to planning a family. The couple also recently went viral for publicly sharing a kiss.
Keenan, 29, a professional Argentinian field hockey player, walked over to Jetten in the stands for a quick kiss and cuddle during a match against Japan on August 16. (Argentina won 0-3, so maybe that smooch had some serious power!)
The affectionate moment offered a glimpse of an openly gay world leader supporting his partner on an international sporting stage.
Now, their announcement has drawn an outpouring of congratulations and support as they prepare to become fathers.
