Dustin Lance Black spent the last six months calling Holland, Mich., home while preparing his directorial debut, his follow-up to winning an Oscar for writing Milk.

But while he was embraced by the locals, the town's Hope College, a conservative Christian school, wasn't so welcoming, banning a screening of Milk and barring Black from appearing on campus.
