Dustin Lance Black has filmed a PSA encouraging viewers to make Harvey Milk Day on May 22 a day of action. In the video, the Academy Award-winning Milk screenwriter urges Californians to "join door-to-door canvases across the state to tell our personal stories about why we, our parents, and our children deserve the right to marry the person we love." The first Harvey Milk Day will take place in California on the birthday of the slain civil rights activist, and Equality California is planning events in all major California cities. The day, which is the first to honor an openly LGBT person, came about due to a bill authored in 2009 by gay state senator Mark Leno and sponsored by Equality California.
