New York magazine profiles Seth Weissman (center), the real estate investor who is determined to bring Fire Island Pines into the 21st century.
The gay 27-year-old first vacationed at the gay getaway after college and immediately fell in love with its rituals of low tea and high tea.
"It was sort of like the Willy Wonka movie from the seventies with Gene Wilder, when he sings, like, the song 'Pure Imagination' and gives the tour of the factory," Weissman told New York. "That was what it was for me: life as it really should be and could be."
But the Wharton graduate and Goldman Sachs real estate specialist saw much room for improvement, especially with the Blue Whale restaurant and the Pines' single hotel, which featured shared bathrooms and exorbitant rates. Along with 49-year-old Pinesman Andrew Kirtzman (pictured, right) and 37-year-old "metrosexual" Matthew Blesso (left), Weissman purchased the hotel, the Blue Whale, a nightclub, and retail spaces. Changes have already come: The club and pool deck are now connected, the disco has a new sound system and lighting, and the Blue Whale's food has been majorly upgraded.
