Pride Parades have been banned in the city since 2015, but unofficial marches are still organized annually.
Turkey is one of the 20 Muslim countries where homosexuality is technically legal. However, in 2016, officials banned the Pride Parade, and 11 LGBT activists were arrested. A year later, these activists were finally acquitted.
Central Alabama Pride has been awarded The Advocate’s inaugural Communities of Pride Award.
The Novoulyanovsk city manager withdrew the permit, citing a desire to protect children from "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations."
Organizers said that about 6,500 people attended the rally this year.
