Trans Protections Approved in Dallas

DALLAS COUNTY COMMISIONERS X390 (SOURCED) | ADVOCATE.COM

A vote of 3-2 added nondiscrimination protections for transgender workers in Dallas County Tuesday.

The order adds “transgender, gender identity, and gender expression” to the county’s existing laws against workplace discrimination, which currently provide protections against discrimination on the basis of religion, color, race, national origin, sex, age, disability, and political affiliation.

Calling the decision a “historic moment” for Dallas County, commissioner Elba Garcia said the vote was “about equality and justice for everybody.”

On March 22, the court of commissioners added sexual orientation to the county’s nondiscrimination policy, and since that date many transgender people have addressed the court, asking for the same protection for transgender employees.

Voting against the proposal were the court’s two Republican commissioners, Maurine Dickey, who believed transgender people were already protected under the existing language, and Mike Cantrell, who said he wanted to save the taxpayers from potential legal liability.

Mr. Cantrell, If you truly want to save the taxpayers the cost of defending the city's discriminatory practices than stop them. It's much simpler to do, much more satisfying and less expensive than not passing this law.

As usual, it's the Repulsicans who fight against our rights. The excuses they gave were ridiculous and were just covering up their real reason: hatred. Dickey claimed she voted against it because she though transgenders were protected by the gay provisions and was “reluctant to add separate protective classes”. Someone should tell her that many transgenders are not gay. I would love to hear Cantrell's explanation for how protecting transgenders could create a liability. I could use the laugh.

Well I guess all the people in TX are not our talibangelicals. But it sure sounds like we should bring the troops home to fight the repubs - talbangelicals to the core, with a few exceptions
