Mason Wyler Comes Clean

Porn star Mason Wyler has never been shy about his sex drive — which is why he says he expected mixed response to his announcement that he's HIV-positive.

As gay porn stars go, few know how to raise eyebrows quite like Mason Wyler. The 26-year-old self-described “sex fiend” is known for being more graphic than your average porn star — in January he detailed a sexual relationship with an Internet porn star who was a “roid-raged, drug-addicted, racist asshole.” His ads on sites like Adam4Adam and Manhunt in 2009 declared he was trying to see how much sex a slut could have online and that “anything goes.” And in 2008 he made headlines when he posted on his blog that he’d been raped — when he followed it up with a series of posts about enjoying rough sex and ultimately decided against pressing charges, several bloggers suggested he’d made the entire thing up.

Now Wyler is making headlines again — this time for coming out as HIV-positive. In a post on his official website, Wyler says he tested positive in May and has “only myself to blame.” And as it has before, response has been all over the map — from supportive to indifferent to the suggestion it’s all just a publicity stunt.

Wyler talks to The Advocate about his decision to disclose his status, what this means for his porn career and how he feels about the mixed response to his announcement.

The Advocate: What made you decide to come forward and tell people you’d tested positive?
Mason Wyler:Well, a former housemate of mine tweeted about it, trying to smear me in a negative light and suggest I was out there spreading disease. And then one of the industry bloggers picked it up and tried to smear me in a similar light. Since it was already out there that I had tested positive, I thought I should say something.

In your blog post, you said you have only yourself to blame.
I take responsibility for my own actions.

What have you learned? Would you go back and do anything differently?

I’d like to say I would — that I’d be 100% safe, that I wouldn’t be as promiscuous. But that’s really hard to say. It’s not like I learned anything new because I never thought I was invincible, I never thought it couldn’t happen to me. I knew all the risks. I knew each time I participated in unsafe sex it was a good possibility I might get something. It’s like saying after you get shit-faced drunk and you wake up the next day with the worst hangover ever that you’re never going to drink again. It’s very difficult to actually adhere to that.

To those who are tearing this guy apart...get over yourselves. Like you've never had unprotected sex. And to say that gay men seek out other positive guys is ridiculous. I'm 26 and I've been in a monogomous relationship for 3 years with a great man and the love of my life. Isn't that what you want? The ones making these accusations? Or do you also want to be positive? And BTW I didn't read anything in this article that sounded like Mason was trying to criticize anyone for what they do. He knows what he did wrong and he knows the consequences. I have lots of friends who are positive and they are amazing people. A few of them have problems and a few of them are just unlucky souls that made a bad decision. So to lump everyone together is wrong. It could happen to anyone. I think we should stop abusing each other and love one another. Mason use what star power you have left to send a 'positive' message to young guys out there who might not fully understand how the world works.

John, sorry but the MAJORITY of gay men DO NOT lead these porn-party lifestyles; they do not go around trying to find subversive sex groups to join, swapping partners every which way, and they do not go seeking diseases. Whatever study you read is NOT representative of gay men and, if you are "not straight" you should be ashamed of yourself for perpurtrating all the complete rubbish you have in your statement: I dread to think what youve based your beliefs on; all I can think is that if its experience you are very unlucky: If its through the media/ internet then you are extremely naive. It is a MINORITY of very loud, obnoxious and sadly "in your face" gay men who create this illusion and believe me they are wholly despised by the vast majority of the gay community. I personally know a lot of gay men; I dont know any who would cheat on their partners, and Ive only met one who was your stereotypical slut - and nobody wanted to be around him.

I read in a psychology book once that some gay guys seek out other HIV+ guys, having unprotected sex, hoping to get the disease themselves. When the author asked those people why, their response was that they felt like they wanted to "belong" somewhere. It is sad that the majority of gay people are drawn into this lifestyle of wild partying, uninhibited sex orgies, cheating on their partners, doing drugs and all that. And then they accuse people of being homophobic. Most gay groups seclude themselves in their own little orgies and fantasyland anyway, keeping straight people at a distance and allowing their own sexuality to define who they are and which group they belong to. And now they are contracting and spreading diseases as well? It's a sad life. And no, I am not straight by the way.

Since you informed the world on your "big secret" isnt it time to tell them about June 10, 2010 the night you had sex with an underage male? Maybe if you told him that you were HIV positive the situation would be different. But how dare you take risk with his life! And when he asked you and you told him that you were clean and "the porn industry is completely safe so there was no way you had any STD." Welll now your other secret is out! How does it feel to be marked as what you are? A petifile!

Jake in Brooklyn - Do you feel you should be taken serious in life ? You might be- if you learned how to spell. You are not texting someone here, in case you forgot. It scares me the way you influence any minors by way of your spelling and grammar. Are you too cool for school and are a wanna-be ghetto kinda guy? Good luck with that dingbat.

Really guy? I am looking at the cover with ted haggerd on it and all i can think is you have some fetish porn hidden away some where. The majority of people who watch porn do not lead lonely empty lives- there are studies i can share with you that show this. they also so show that anti-porn zealots hare the ones who hide their porn because they believe there bent is so bad no one would want them (not true- read savage love sometime) and it fills them with shame and self loathing- eventually turn it out word. Plain and simple when you write that you "don't get it" you credability goes out the window.

porn is a wrong business period, it's protected free speech and in that we've lost what porn really is. So many of you have said you are fan's, fans of what ? fans of a guy whose having sex for you to watch because your lives are so lonely and empty that you need to watch someone else ? I don't get it ? what are you watching ? Mason because he's young blond and blue eyed and you wish that you could have him ? But you can ! his fee is not so out of reach, and when you have him then what ? I guess my question is , what is the ultimate purpose of sex ? my second question is why so much interest in Wyler the guy wouldn't know the truth if it spat on him, or have we forgotten the rape incedent ?
