Paterson Re-ups N.Y. Marriage Pledge

New York is on track for a special session this fall and Governor Paterson says marriage equality will be on the agenda.

New York governor David Paterson recommitted himself to including same-sex marriage on the agenda if he has to call a special session this fall in order to shore up the state's budget woes.

“I am anticipating a special session and I am anticipating this is one of the issues that we will address,” Paterson told The Advocate Thursday night, shortly after leaving a meeting that included representatives from the Empire State Pride Agenda, the Human Rights Campaign, and Gill Action Fund. State senator Thomas Duane joined the discussion by phone.

A special session is almost a foregone conclusion at this point, according to people familiar with the situation in Albany. But assembly speaker Sheldon Silver said this week that he would like to pound out the details of a budget deal before agreeing to hold one.

“They want to have a framework before we come back,” said Paterson. “But I do think because of the deficit we’re going to have to come back and hopefully we'll have an agreement.”

The main purpose of the session, which many insiders anticipate would come toward the end of September, would be to close what amounts to at least a $2.1 billion gap in the Empire State's budget this year. But Paterson said same-sex marriage should also be one of the issues up for discussion.

“Normally I wouldn't do it this way,” he said of adding the marriage bill as an agenda item to a special session. “But I felt that the whole fight over the coup denied the people of New York resolution on a number of issues that were very controversial and had been discussed and advocated for. I think that we owe the public a proper disposition on those pieces of legislation, and one of those was marriage equality.”

Tea partys yes.... Republicans want us to pay a tax on everything we do... If we do anything ...Republicans are going to make us pay a tax in the form of their harassment and bullshit. Isn't it about time we had a party.. A Boston tea party..(not that it would have anything to do with a Kennedy), and threw out the arrogant Republican tax on everything we do. Let's instead ....just do it...

Not to be pessimistic, but Patterson has no control over the Senate, his reputation in politics isn't exactly great, and he's relying on the GOP to pass it on the floor. Democrats barely have control over the floor, and since gay marriage is still an undecided factor among Democrats, we have a very low chance of ever having this passed any time soon. As far as talking to Patterson, they might as well have interviewed a bum off the street.

The NY Senate is a joke. Our Governor, who can not control them may be for Gay marriage... but I will be pleasantly surprised if this passes. Contact your NYS Senators regarding this issue.

With incompetent "friends" like this, who needs enemies? Anybody found out yet what Attorney General Cuomo's position is on marriage equality? I voted for the notoriously heterosexual Elliot Spitzer last time & only voted for Paterson by accident. Even if marriage equality passes, I'm sure it'll be despite Paterson rather than because of him. I haven't seen a less competent governor of NY in my lifetime. Paterson is so unpopular that he has nothing to lose by supporting marriage equality. I shudder at the thought that Paterson being so weak might result in Rudy Giuliani becoming Governor.

What does this story tell us? That Paterson is for a vote and will try and call a special session? This is not new or is it news. I appreciate the Governor being a fierce advocate on our issues but he has no control over the Senate as we saw in June and holds no leverage over them since his poll rankings are in the toilet. They can gavel in and gavel out. We will only get a vote when the thugs in the Senate feel they need LGBT money to keep their majority. Until then, this is all speculation and BS.
