Hunter Biden comes out as 48.5% gay

Coming out is usually more personal than mathematical. Hunter Biden made it both.

The former first son declared himself 48.5 percent gay during a recent interview with gay progressive political commentator Luke Beasley — although the figure changed several times as Biden flirted, sparred, and joked his way through the conversation.

“Let’s get serious. I am gay,” Beasley told him near the beginning of the 80-minute interview. “Really? Wow. Seriously. I’m so amazed you’re gay,” Biden responded, feigning astonishment.

When Beasley asked whether Biden was gay, too, he answered, “Only a little bit.”

“More or less than 50 percent?” Beasley pressed.

“48.6,” Biden said.

Biden soon told Beasley that, if he were gay, he would prefer someone “a little bit more masculine.” After further teasing, Biden announced that his “gaydom” had fallen to 47 percent. By the end, however, Beasley had apparently won some of it back.

“I just want to let you know that I am back up to 48.5 percent gay,” Biden eventually said.

Beasley later distilled the gag into a short video titled “Tracking Hunter Biden’s gayness throughout our interview.”

The bit followed Biden’s more pointed recent venture into queer politics. During a July appearance on the I’ve Had It podcast, he argued that Washington was controlled in part by a Republican “closetocracy” — closeted politicians who turn their internal conflict into anti-LGBTQ+ vitriol. “Everybody knows there is this closeted gay mafia, largely Republican, that exists in Washington, D.C.,” Biden said, as The Advocate previously reported. He argued that the politicians’ sexualities were relevant because their alleged hypocrisy affected how they wielded power.

Biden has spent much of the past decade losing control of his own identity. Republicans turned his addiction, intimate photographs, and private communications into a grotesque public spectacle designed to wound his father, former President Joe Biden.

‘You don’t have to live in shame’

Biden said he largely remained silent while his father was president because he was under federal investigation, facing criminal charges and subject to federal probation. Speaking freely under those circumstances, he said, would not have been practical.

He also rejected the description of himself as a willing political distraction.

“It was by no choice of my own that I was a distraction in this,” Biden said. He described the Republican campaign against him as an effort to publicly shame and dehumanize him, beginning with Donald Trump’s “Where’s Hunter?” attacks.

Biden said he has been sober since June 2019. His decision to speak publicly now, he explained, is partly an effort to reach the millions of Americans living with substance use disorders and the families living alongside them.

“Guilt is an appropriate emotion, particularly in recovery,” Biden said. “Getting honest with yourself and with the people around you is the only way forward.”

But guilt requires accountability, he said, while shame demands the belief that a person is unworthy of love.

“You have to make amends for those things that you are appropriately guilty for, but you don’t have to live in shame,” Biden said. “You have to drop the shame if you want to break the cycle of addiction.”

As The Advocate previously reported, that refusal to be embarrassed has made Biden an unexpectedly effective — and frequently funny — adversary for right-wing trolls. Attempts to humiliate a man who openly discusses smoking crack have repeatedly collapsed under the weight of his own self-deprecation.

“Politics is the bait to get people to talk about the one thing that connects us all, and that’s pain,” Biden told Beasley.

Taking his story into hostile territory

That mission has taken Biden onto platforms hosted by people who once helped construct the public case against him, including Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens.

Beasley challenged him on whether cordial appearances with such figures risk rehabilitating commentators who continue to spread conspiracy theories and attack marginalized people. Biden acknowledged the criticism but argued that reaching their audiences requires first establishing a human connection.

He said Carlson, whom he has known socially for decades, helped promote a “Biden crime family” narrative that Carlson knew was false. Sitting down with him allowed Biden to confront that history and let Carlson’s viewers see him without Fox News acting as the intermediary, he said.

Biden made clear that he was not presenting himself as a journalist, Democratic strategist or candidate.

“I get to do whatever the fuck I want to do,” he said. “I’m not running for anything. Nobody in my family is running for anything. I’m not talking on behalf of the Democratic Party. I’m not talking on behalf of anybody.”

His only constituency, Biden suggested, is himself: a father, a son, and a person in recovery who survived having his worst moments converted into campaign material.

He also gave an emotional update on his father, who is living with metastatic prostate cancer. Biden said radiation treatment addressed much of the cancer, but the former president continues to undergo hormone therapy, which has depleted his energy.

“The problem is that he hasn’t stopped,” Biden said, noting that his father has been writing a book and wants to promote it. “I really just wish, ‘Dad, just effing lie down.’”
