The Importance of LGBT Representation in Film

LGBT Erasure

GLAAD reports that most major film studios are failing in LGBT representation. Why is this important? As actor Wilson Cruz remarked on the opening night of the Outfest Los Angeles LGBT film festival, tragedies like the shooting in Orlando remind us that "our work is not done, that there are hearts and minds yet to be changed, that there are stories still yet to be told." He added, "It breaks my heart that their stories and their experiences have only been highlighted because of this tragedy."

To combat this erasure of the LGBT community and people of color from mainstream media, The Advocate asked the filmmakers of the Outfest Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival for a list of queer movies that every straight person in Hollywood should see. Hopefully, it will persuade hearts and minds to tell more rich and diverse stories. Check out the following list, and don't miss their films at Outfest, which runs until Sunday.
