The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Out director Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) brings Emily M. Danforth's beloved 2012 YA novel to the big screen with this timely adaptation. Chloe Grace Moretz stars as Cameron, whose evangelical aunt ships her off to God's Promise, a conversion therapy camp run by Dr. Lydia Marsh (Jennifer Ehle) and her brother/guinea pig for her therapy, the allegedly reformed Rev. Rick (John Gallagher Jr.) after Cameron's caught having sex with a girl in her bible study.
Set in 1993 but totally of-the-moment thanks to the anti-LGBTQ Trump/Pence administration, the film is refreshingly frank in its depiction of queer female sexual desire. Sasha Lane, Emily Skeggs, and Forrest Goodluck costar as fellow "disciples" of God's Promise.
Dyke Queen
Hello Mr. -- a queer publication "about men who date men" -- is celebrating its tenth and final issue, as well as the birth of a new magazine, Dyke Queen, on Saturday. Dyke Queen was created by Yezmin Villarreal and Bridget Ore to highlight and celebrate the identities of queen women. Limited editions of the magazine's final issue, will be available at the event, which will take place at Broken Shaker on the rooftop of Freehand LA from 2 to 6 p.m. Drinks will be available and DJ Kim Anh will be providing music. The Darkest Minds
Amandla Stenberg, who recently came out as gay, is the star of The Darkest Minds, a teen dystopian thrilled directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and written by out screenwriter Chad Hodge. In this timely film, young people have been rounded up in camps by the government, after they develop mysterious supernatural powers. Do they run or resist? Watch it in theaters this weekend.
Pride Night at Citi Field
If you're in New York on Saturday, don't miss the third annual Pride Night at Citi Field, when the Mets take on the Atlanta Braves. Before the first pitch is thrown, the nonprofit Broadway Sings for Pride will perform, with a song from three performers from the Great White Way. Afterwards, American Idol alum Kimberly Locke will sing the national anthem. The Mets Pride night is not only a fun way for LGBTQ baseball fans to gather together, it also serves as a fundraiser for anti-bullying programs in NYC schools. More information here.
Robyn, "Missing U"
Our dancehall queen is back with a new single, "Missing U." Reminiscent of previous Robyn hits like "With Every Heartbeat" and "Dancing on My Own," "Missing U" is a banger drenched in sadness; a song destined to play on a loop at your local gay watering hole -- that's not a dig, this song is classic Robyn, and that's just what our weary community needs right now. "Missing U" is from a forthcoming album due out later this year; a documentary on Robyn's life is also in the works.
The Spy Who Dumped Me
Directed by Susanna Fogel -- who previously helmed Life Partners, a relationship comedy about a lesbian and straight best friend -- The Spy Who Dumped Me finally gives Kate McKinnon the starring role she deserves. Packed with intense action sequences, raunchy jokes, and even male nudity, this action comedy is among the few that show female friends who can face every obstacle but lose their bestie.
Sir Ivan’s “Get Together”
Can electronic dance music heal the partisan divide? It can sure try! "Get Together," a new single by Sir Ivan, attempts just that. The track is a remake of the classic 1967 Youngbloods song, which has been repurposed as an entreaty to once again "get together, try to love one another, right now." As Sir Ivan said, "As in the 1960's, we are undergoing a time of deep divisions in our country. There's never been a better time to get together."
