11 celebs who love their LGBTQ+ siblings

When you’re queer, having a supportive family, or even just one supportive family member, can make all the difference in the world.

Having someone you can be honest with about your life with, a shoulder to lean on, or even someone to defend you from bullies can change your life. And if that person is someone you’ve known your entire life, it can be even more meaningful.

Thankfully, there are many prominent celebrities who proudly love and support their LGBTQ+ siblings — here are 11 of them.

    1. John Cena

Wrestler-turned-actor John Cena recently opened up about growing up with a gay older brother on Dax Shepherd’s Armchair Expert podcast. He’s been publicly supportive of his brother for over a decade.

“Life was tough for my brother in high school. Not only was he an introvert and interested in computers. He’s also gay. And being gay in the 1980s in a small town in Massachusetts… man, that’s an uphill climb,” he said. “He just had a lot of character traits that weren’t in the ‘cool kid’ group, and he’s also holding this secret that he can’t tell or talk to anybody about.”

    2. Ariana Grande

Ariana and Frankie Grande are two of the most famous examples of an ally sibling and gay sibling who publicly support each other. Franke Grande is an actor, appearing in Broadway shows like Rock of Ages and Mamma Mia!, and on reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother. He and Ariana love to appear together publicly and are always supporting each other.

    3. Pedro Pascal

When The Mandalorian and The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal’s sister Lux came out as trans in 2021, he immediately stepped up to publicly support her. Later he said that while he is protective of her, she is also protective of him.

“She is and has always been one of the most powerful people and personalities I’ve ever known. My protective side is lethal, but I need her more than she needs me,” he said.

    4. Chris Evans

Captain America himself has said that his gay brother Scott, who appeared as a Ken in last 2023’s blockbuster Barbie movie, helped him to “cultivate compassion and understanding” for people different from him.

"Growing up with women helped me, but growing up in the theater helped me, growing up in a progressive community helped me. I think it's really important to put faces to the situations that we're navigating as a society."

    5. Anne Hathaway

    Charles Eshelman/FilmMagic

Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway loves her gay brother Michael so much she converted religions for him. She told GQ that she and her family left the Catholic church over its anti-gay stance.

“The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out. Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother? So I'm... nothing. Fuck it, I'm forming. I'm a work in progress,” she said.

    6. Colin Farrell

    Sylvain Gaboury/FilmMagic

Colin Farrell has long supported his gay brother Eamon, and in 2014 even wrote an open letter to his fellow Irishmen arguing that the country should legalize gay marriage. Later, he served as his brother’s best man when he got married to his husband.

    7. Jeff Goldblum

While Jeff Goldblum’s brother Lee passed away in 2000, Goldblum has continued to show support for him. In 2019, he revealed that their father had sent Lee to gay conversion therapy.

“He didn't tell the rest of us. Sent him to a therapist in order to 'fix him'. It was all secret. That's not so nourishing,” he said. “My dad was, without knowing why, conspicuously cruel to him at times.”

    8. Max Carver

Charlie and Max Carver are identical twin actors who rose to fame on shows like Desperate Housewives and Teen Wolf. Charlie came out as gay in 2016, and the two are still as close as ever.

    9. Chance the Rapper

When Chance the Rapper’s brother Taylor Bennett came out as bisexual in 2017, Chance tweeted out his support, saying, “Love this man right here, through any and all. He has grown into a great man. He's got God and me behind him, he cannot fail he cannot fall.”

    10. Cyndi Lauper

Cyndi Lauper has been a fierce LGBTQ+ ally for decades, and her song “True Colors” is a true gay anthem. Part of the reason for her dedication to the community is her love for her lesbian sister Elen.

    11. Adam Levine

    Charley Gallay/Getty Images For Westfield

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine is fiercely supportive of his gay brother Michael Noah Levine, and says that their family knew he was gay when he was two.

"We all really wanted to provide some cushion for him and constantly let him know that it's OK," Levine said. "A lot of people don't want their kid to be gay and will fight it at all costs. But I've got news for you--it's a losing fucking battle. The more you fight it, the more fucked-up your kid's gonna be. You've just gotta embrace it from the beginning. That's the only way to deal with it as a family. Otherwise, you're just screwing yourself over, and you're gonna make your kid miserable."
