Two Washington, D.C. roommates are facing drug trafficking charges after they were found with a distributable amount of substances in their luggage while boarding a cruise ship in Miami, the Washington Blade reports.
Peter Melendez, 36, and Robert Koehler, 27, were arrested Sunday and released on bonds of $7,500 and $30,000, respectively; they will be arraigned March 5.
Both men also work as contractors for the government -- Melendez reportedly does work for the Defense Department -- which has made their legal predicament even more precarious. Department of Homeland Security officials allegedly found emails where the men discussed distributing drugs on the gay-themed cruise; some of the communications were reportedly sent on Melendez's government computer.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection found the drugs when the men were boarding the Caribbean-bound ship at the Port of Miami.
"Among the findings in both their luggage were approximately 27 grams of suspected MDMA, known as ecstasy; 18 grams of Ketamine; and 246 grams of suspected GHB. Also found in Melendez's luggage were five grams of Adderall, a prescription amphetamine; and seven grams of Viagra," the Blade reports, citing the the arrest affidavit.
