Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders today released a video touting his support for LGBT rights and a diverse group of people praising him for it.
“He voted against the Defense of Marriage Act,” says one, while another says, “He’s an original sponsor of the Equality Act.”
Sanders is also shown challenging a man from the floor of Congress. “You said something about homos in the military,” Sanders says. “Was the gentleman referring to the many thousands and thousands of gay people who have put their lives on the line in countless wars? You have insulted thousands.”
The U.S. senator from Vermont is trailing former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, also a former U.S. senator and a fellow LGBT rights supporter, in the delegate count, but he has said he will stay in the race for the Democratic nomination until the end.
The video, posted today to Sanders’s Facebook page and YouTube, is titled “Be the Change You Want to See.” That echoes a quote often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, although he apparently never said or wrote those exact words. Watch it below.
