A lesbian is suing the city of Uppsala, Sweden, after being denied artificial insemination, United Press International reported Saturday.

The woman and her partner had tried to become pregnant using artificial insemination three separate times and were denied a fourth attempt because the partner had passed the maximum age.

According to UPI, the younger partner then decided to try to become pregnant in the place of her partner but was denied artificial insemination since the older partner had already attempted to get pregnant.

"As we see it we have treated them as a couple. Should you have double the number of opportunities to get pregnant just because you are a lesbian couple?" Ulf Hansson, senior physician at the hospital, told UPI.

The couple, represented by the Ombudsman Against Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation (HomO), are demanding that the city pay $33,156 in compensation.

"We consider the grounds on which the couple were refused to be inconsistent with current discrimination legislation," HomO spokeswoman Christine Giljam told UPI. (The Advocate)
