Looks like San Francisco Democrats may have their own version of a disruptive Congressman, after state assemblyman Tom Ammiano shouted "you lie!" and, some claim, "kiss my gay ass" to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger during a generally hostile reception at a party fundraiser on Wednesday.
Ammiano called the appearance by Schwarzenegger at the Fairmont Hotel a "very cheap publicity stunt," according to the San Francisco Chronicle . Displeasure is mounting over the governor's approach to LGBT issues, particularly what appears to be his likely veto of a proposal for a state day honoring slain gay rights leader, Harvey Milk.
"This isn't a chamber where someone suffers through," Ammiano said afterward, according to the San Francisco Chronicle . "This is our house -- and it's like someone came in and took a big dump. He showed up; it was rude, he got up there and it felt to us that he was trivializing all the issues we care about. You have a few options, and along with the labor people, we walked out," he said.
San Francisco mayor Willie Brown reportedly was mortified by Ammiano's behavior, while the governor laughed about it. In a statement, he said the reception "compared to the reaction I got in Hyannis Port when I told the Kennedys I was marrying Maria, it was fantastic," according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
