Gay rights activist Harvey Milk was inducted into the California Hall of Fame in Sacramento Tuesday, along with 12 other influential individuals.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and first lady Maria Shriver hosted the evening that featured honorees including filmmaker George Lucas, actress Carol Burnett, author Danielle Steel, and football icon John Madden.
"Harvey gave his life for what he believed in, and in doing so gave hope to generations of LGBT Californians who continue to struggle for full equality," said state senator Mark Leno of San Francisco, a gay man who has introduced numerous pieces of pro-LGBT legislation, reports CBS 5.
Profiles of each person will be displayed for the next year at the California Museum in Sacramento, alongside memorabilia reflecting their achievements.
Others who were honored include athlete and philanthropist Rafer Johnson, philanthropist Joan B. Kroc, artist Fritz Scholder, body builder Joe Weider, and Air Force test pilot Gen. Chuck Yeager.
