Two men from Argentina tied the knot Monday, becoming the first same-sex couple to marry in Latin America, USA Today reports.
Alex Freye, 39, and Jose Maria di Bello, 41, first tried to get married on December 1, World AIDS Day, after a judge ruled that Buenos Aires officials must extend marriage equality. But the men's ceremony was put on hold when a second judge determined that they had to wait for the outcome of a supreme court appeal of the earlier decision.
Monday's ceremony took place in the registry office in Ushuaia after Governor Fabiana Rios overruled a civil registrar who initially refused to wed the couple. "We knew the governor was a person who sympathized with this cause," Di Bello said. "It's a step toward judicial equality for every man and woman" in Argentina.
Earlier this month Mexico City's city council passed a bill to legalize marriage equality there. The bill is currently awaiting the expected signature from Mayor Marcelo Ebrard.
