California voters won't elect a new governor until the end of the year, but already Equality California is sending out e-mails urging gay voters not to support Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO they say is anti-equality.
Though Whitman has pointed to her track record at eBay as evidence she supports equal rights, she actively campaigned in favor of Proposition 8, the ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage in the state.
Reads Equality California's e-mail: "She is trying to buy the governor's office with ads that fail to tell the true story about who she really is -- an anti-equality candidate who has fought to eliminate the rights of LGBT people in an attempt to drum up conservative support to win an election."
The email suggests that while current Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has refused to defend Prop. 8 in court and has "signed into law dozens of pro-LGBT rights bills," Meg Whitman "advocated for eliminating our fundamental freedoms."
