Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and current congressman Joe Sestak submitted a bill last week that would prevent anti-LGBT discrimination in the rental, sale, or financing of a home.

The Housing Nondiscrimination Act would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the characteristics that cannot be considered in housing transactions, including race and sex.

"Under current federal law and Pennsylvania law, LGBT individuals can be denied housing for their sexual orientation and gender identity," Sestak, who represents a Pennsylvania district, said in a press release. "While some states and the District of Columbia have caught up with the times and passed housing antidiscrimination laws for lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans, the federal government has failed to protect these individuals' access to one of the most basic securities -- housing."
