President of the Family Research Council Tony Perkins said he was "astonished" by Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels' suggestion that the next president may have to avoid controversial social issues (like gay marriage) in favor of focusing on fiscal problems.
"Not only is he noncommittal about his role as a pro-life leader, but the governor wouldn't even agree to a modest step like banning taxpayer-funded promotion of abortion over seas," Perkins told Politico, noting former President Bush did on his first day in office. Bush's move also put an end to supporting international organizations that did not promote abstinence-only education.
Perkins said he completely supported the governor in terms of fiscal responsibility, adding "nothing is more fiscally responsible than ending the taxpayer funding of abortion and abortion promotion."
