Trailing in the Florida Republican gubernatorial primary race by double digits, candidate Rick Scott has blasted opponent Bill McCollum, currently the state's attorney general, over McCollum's use of now-infamous "ex-gay" proponent George Rekers as an expert witness in a gay adoption case.
Scott, a social conservative who is anti-marriage equality, claimed in a recently distributed flier that McCollum "wasted our money and used poor judgment" when he paid Rekers $120,000 to testify in a Florida adoption case, the Miami New Timesreports. The court rejected Rekers's testimony for lack of credibility.
Rekers is a cofounder of the Family Research Council, along with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson. He is a former board member of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, a group promoting "ex-gay" reparative therapy. In May the New Times reported that Rekers had been caught with a gay male escort, with whom he took a European trip.
