Rosie O'Donnell Speaks Out About Ex-Wife Michelle Rounds's Suicide

Rosie O'Donnell

O'Donnell, who adopted a daughter with Rounds, commented on the tragedy of mental illness.

Rosie O'Donnell's ex-wife Michelle Rounds, with whom she adopted their now-4-year-old child Dakota, has died in an apparent suicide at the age of 46, according to TMZ. And while they divorced in 2015, O'Donnell commented on the death of her ex, who was found at her home on Monday.

"I am saddened to hear about this terrible tragedy. Mental illness is a very serious issue affecting many families. My thoughts and prayers go out to Michelle's family, her wife and their child," O'Donnell told TMZ.

O'Donnell and Rounds had a whirlwind romance; they met and began dating in 2011 and married in 2012. They endured a pair of health scares at the time of their marriage when Rounds underwent surgery for painful Desmoid tumors and shortly thereafter, O'Donnell suffered a heart attack. But by 2014 they had split and filed for divorce, which for a time turned ugly over who would get custody of Dakota.

Rounds had attempted suicide at least once before. In September of 2015, she was rushed to the hospital after having overdosed on pills. O'Donnell kept her talking on the phone until paramedics arrived, according to People.

Rounds leaves behind her wife, Krista Monteleone, and two daughters -- a child with Monteleone as well as Dakota.
