Claire for Delaware

Delaware state Rep. Claire Snyder-Hall has won a second term representing the coastal communities around Rehoboth Beach, returning an out lesbian and longtime democracy advocate to a legislature grappling with questions about civil rights, affordability, and the reach of the Trump administration.

The Democrat defeated Republican Mike Simpler in a rematch of their 2024 contest. Decision Desk HQ called the race at 9:25 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday night.

With over 95 percent of the vote counted, Snyder-Hall had 70 percent to Simpler’s 30 percent.

Snyder-Hall’s victory was another win for LGBTQ+ representation in Delaware, where U.S. Rep. Sarah McBride also secured reelection. McBride became the first openly transgender person elected to Congress in 2024.

The 14th District includes Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach and parts of Lewes. At an October candidate forum, Simpler questioned how relevant President Donald Trump’s policies are to the work of Delaware lawmakers. Snyder-Hall argued that decisions in Washington directly affect the state’s budget and its residents, Delaware Public Media reported.

That connection between government and daily life has shaped Snyder-Hall’s career. Before her election in 2024, she led Common Cause Delaware, where she worked on voting access, campaign finance reform, and government accountability. She previously chaired the district’s Democratic committee and helped organize for marriage equality. Before moving to Rehoboth Beach full time in 2011, she taught at George Mason University.

Her reelection platform paired defending LGBTQ+ people and democratic institutions with addressing the costs of remaining in the communities she represents. She called for more affordable housing, expanded access to health care and better transportation for workers who commute into the district.

Days before the election, Snyder-Hall joined officials at the October 29 unveiling of a historical marker honoring Poodle Beach, a longtime LGBTQ+ gathering place in Rehoboth Beach. The marker stands at Prospect Street and the South Boardwalk.
