105 Photos of Portland's Pride Parade — Inclusive and Controversial

Although anti-LGBT demonstrations were rumored for Portland Pride, Portlanders showed up in great numbers to celebrate. The annual Portland Pride Parade was stopped, however, for seven minutes on Sunday, as peaceful protesters said they were bringing attention to racism, mass incarceration, the Dakota Access Pipeline, and police involvement in the parade. Pride parades began across the country in 1970 in reaction to Stonewall. As Babatunde Azubuike, an organizer of Sankofa Collective Northwest, a Black LGBTQ advocacy organization in Portland, said, "Pride started as a riot against police brutality, particularly for black and brown trans women of color. Without them, there would be no modern-day Pride at all." See how it all happened in photos.
