Hester’s murder sparked Transgender Day of Remembrance and inspired community action in her hometown of Boston
"We must never be silent in the face of hate," the president said.
The state has a hate-crimes law, but it does not cover crimes motivated by a victim's sexual orientation or gender identity.
In a city park, friends and loved ones gathered to remember Daniel Aston and Kelly Loving, who were both gunned down at the Colorado Springs queer bar Club Q.
The Human Rights Campaign released its annual report on Transgender Day of Remembrance, highlighting the disproporionate violence transgender and gender nonconforming people face.
"There should be no place for hate in America — and yet too many transgender Americans, including young people, are cruelly targeted and face harassment simply for being themselves," Biden said.
“Too many transgender people have been killed just for living as their true, authentic selves,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal said.
