Cindy McCain Poses for NOH8

Cindy McCain x390 (Fair Use) I Advocate.com

The NOH8 Campaign on Wednesday announced that Cindy McCain, the wife of former Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, has posed to demonstrate her support of marriage equality. NOH8’s Adam Bouska has photographed thousands of subjects since California passed Proposition 8 in 2008. All of the subjects are photographed with duct tape over their mouths to symbolize that their voices aren’t being heard on the subject of marriage equality.

Writes the NOH8 blog: “In the year since we’ve started the NOH8 Campaign, we’ve been surprised at some of the different individuals who have approached us showing their support. Few, though, have surprised us more than Cindy McCain — the wife of Senator John McCain and mother to vocal marriage equality advocate Meghan McCain. The McCains are one of the most well-known Republican families in recent history, and for Mrs. McCain to have reached out to us to offer her support truly means a lot. Although we had worked with Meghan McCain before and we were aware of her own position, we’d never really thought the cause might be something her mother could get behind.”

See portraits of both women at the group’s site. Read Advocate.com's interview with photographer Adam Bouska about the Cindy McCain shoot.

Good for Cindy! The more allies we have, the more people of all cultures "speaking" out for us, the better. If more Republican women that admire her see this then that gets their minds thinking and maybe talking to their idiot husbands and hopefully brings more support to "our side". I am appalled at some of the comments in here. YOU are the ones that are suspect! I want to know why the daughter is an activist for us. You gave us a tease, how about the full meal deal?

She looks high maintenance. And who typically 'maintains' this type of woman? This is not so much a political ploy as much as a pandering to men who could turn her hair green. I wish more women who frequented my salon would share her sentiment. It still amazes me how many women are against gay rights but wouldn't even consider a colorist who is straight.

Liam, what planet did you come from? You say: "Republicans are desperately pretending not to be anti gay anymore." It was the bizarro planet wasn't it? Oh, it just has to be that planet where everything is backwards or opposite from earth! Because reality's a lot different down here, pal - this lady is one of the few nationally-known republicans who have taken a stand like this. She's got no reason but principled sincerity to do this, and contrary to your bizarro perception she's not looking for power or running for any office, and if she were it would definitely hurt her in the GOP. You've got a lot to learn about politics down here on earth, Liam.

Its really pathetic how Republicans are desperately pretending not to be anti gay anymore. They'll do anything to sleaze their way back into power, I dont buy for one minute that Cindy McCain is an "ally", this is just a publicity stunt meant to distract uninformed LGBT people and to get them to vote republican.

Even though I am a pretty liberal guy I always felt that Senator McCain was an ok guy, one of those neighbors that you could talk to over the fence over some ice tea. In fact, will before his run for the White House he seemed to have pretty moderate view for a good ole boy Republican. I think that someone who has lived as long as he has and has experienced the hardships he has is probably pretty fair minded when he is far from the public spot light. I didn't have any inkling of Cindy McCain until she was campaigning for her husband and I always got this strong sense that she was a very straight laced far right of center republican so this Ad surprises me. I guess we all should not be so quick to judge.... maybe, god willing, someday gays and lesbians will be able to legally marry and then if that happens we must really fight the fight and see if Democrats will marry Republicans, (just a thought).

Kristi, The Advocate will post whatever people says. They don't moderate or check the authority of persons behind these comments. It's likely that 80% of what you find here are from anti-gay groups who just want to stir it up and confuse people.

Geesh... DO you not want support for your cause? After seeing these comments... I wish she would not have done this. You will never get Americans to go along with you if you continue to act like MORONS and bash everyone.. even people who put themselves out there in support like Cindy McCain.

@Sean in Miami. Scare tactics? LOLOL!! You think I made all that up? Your ignorance is showing. The GOP position on LGBTQ issues isn't a vague rumor whispered in secret meetings. How the majority of republicans feel about us is very, very well known. Ever heard of "The Family" and what their political goals are?
