Log Cabin Condoms Promote Offshore Drilling

Safe sex and natural resources policy converged this past Saturday at the Twin Cities Pride festival, where the Minnesota chapter of the Log Cabin Republicans distributed condoms in wrappers emblazoned with the phrase “Drill, baby, drill!!” in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

City Pages reported on the condoms, which Log Cabin distributed free at its booth in Loring Park in Minneapolis. The text on the condom wrapper added the warning “Just don’t spill” to the slogan “Drill, baby, drill,” first invoked at the 2008 Republican convention by former Maryland lieutenant governor and current Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele. Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin helped to popularize the phrase, which calls for more exploration of domestic oil and gas reserves, both offshore and on land.

Log Cabin Republicans of Minnesota spokesman Alan Shilepsky told The Advocate that his group, which tries to present something unique every year at Pride, hit on the condom concept in the last several weeks and found it to be in perfect alignment with the national conversation surrounding the April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig and the resulting oil spill.

“This one was such a no-brainer,” said Shilepsky. “With all the national attention with BP and the Gulf of Mexico and the suspension of any deep-water drilling, and Sarah Palin saying those words, it was like the planets coming into conjunction. What a great way to be in the spirit of pride.”

Despite arriving at the idea easily, it took some work to order and prepare the giveaways for distribution. As treasurer, Shilepsky said he received a bill for 1,000 condoms, give or take.

“One of our board members came up with the idea,” he said. “He ordered a quantity of condoms and another board member desktop-printed the graphic and we printed them off on labels and then two of our guys spent a lot of time pasting labels onto condoms. We had them there and they went like hotcakes.”

The condom was a surprise to Charles Moran, LCR's national spokesman. "We did not know they were coming up with that particular piece of collateral," Moran says. "But we leave it to each chapter to design and produce their own tchotchke outside of what standard Log Cabin-branded materials we provide them for the local pride festivals across the country. Sometimes they are a hit, sometimes not so much, but it gets people talking and having the conversation about what it means to be a conservative in the LGBT movement."

Even Democrats at the Twin Cities pride festival were amused, if not on board with the pro-offshore drilling message, according to Shilepsky.

“Everyone enjoyed it,” he said. “It got a rise out of our fifth district congressman, Keith Ellison. He enjoyed it and asked for a couple to take over to the Democratic booth.”

"You can keep bashing democrats and Obama at every chance you get in this forums ..." Thank you although one need not require your permission to do so. And in all sense I am trying to speak up in midst of all this political correctness and tomfoolery that plagues political hacks and extremists of BOTH sides. "all while keep pretending your fake neutrality in the issues." I don't think I pretend to be "neutral" on the issues, and I think you have a warped view of what neutrality means. I have already stated my beliefs on various issues and have stated my alliance not to a political ideology but that of total liberty where people come first. Maybe this is why you are confused. You have no sense of what total freedom actually means.

"Besides how many gays or lesbians have been elected to congress for the GOP and how many for the Democrats?" Well lets start with famous congressmen, Barney Frank (D) and Jim Kolbe (R). Of course there many closeted politicians and yes there in BOTH parties, Larry Craig (R) and Gov. McGreevey (sp?) (D). Are there plenty of Dems that are apposed to gay marriage? yup: Obama, Biden, Sen. Nelson, Ford Jr., Sen. Leahy and many more. And of course there are Republicans that support it: Mayor Sanders, Gov. Schwarzenegger, Laura Bush, Ron Paul and etc. But in the end what is precious and valid is substance and that is what BOTH parties lack. They both pander to their bases with empty promises. And there no "huge" differences, just the matter of appearance as one is openly homophobic the other "appears" to be "friendly." The fact is they got you where they want you: a patsy that plays into their political dem vs. rep facade, while these politicians laugh all the way to the bank, together.

"...both sides are equally worthless to the gay community..." No they are not, you see, there is a BIG difference between being an official part of the party and another getting the delusion of being part of the party. Besides how many gays or lesbians have been elected to congress for the GOP and how many for the Democrats? You can keep bashing democrats and Obama at every chance you get in this forums all while keep pretending your fake neutrality in the issues. Is like the new tactic since the tea party started. They claim that both parties suck, but if you happen to like one, choose GOP.

"I sometimes wonder if they are really gay" Yes they are gay. And much to the dismay of other gays they are loyal to a party just as their liberal counterparts in the DNC, being that both sides are equally worthless to the gay community. I find it quite funny that there are many gays that have superseded loyalty and allegiance to any party before doing the hardest part of elevating the status of gay and lesbian Americans. Why are we working backwards? (question directed to the gay Repubiks and Donkeys.)

Is really sad they identify as a gay group to let themselves be used in this way. I sometimes wonder if they are really gay, or is just a fake group to make the GOP look "gay approachable" (I wouldn't even use the word friendly). We can't get married, most red states are passing anti gay laws, the GOP of Texas and Oklahoma want to make being gay a crime, but hey, if drilling bothers environmentalists commie hippies, whats a real second class citizen going to do?

This argument about offshore drilling has been going on since I was a child. I remember playing on the beach in Santa Barbara and getting tar stuck all over me from the oil spills of the early seventies. Much of that oil is still there although it is now covered up by dirt and sand. Take a look at this: http://dryotamrcnhppkd.blogspot.com/2010/05/oil-on-beach.html

@ Bob if that “note” was intended for me, I know they were distributed by Log Cabin Republicans, that is why I referred to them as “treacherous, traitor bastards”. Perhaps I would have been clearer had I written “self-hating, treacherous, traitor bastards”.

"conservatives deregulation of the oil industry" Uh, the oil industry is regulated more than you can imagine. And for the last time, BP is a democrat friendly company that donated over a million dollars to obama and more to the democratic congress. BTW lets be clear that it was the same regulations that pushed this oil rig to the deep ocean, which was a site that the Dept. of the Interior and Dept of Energy (specifically the Minerals Division) chose for that specific rig to drill. So please get your facts straight before you regurgitate the same stupid babel.
