Eight Arrested in Vegas ENDA Protest

GETEQUAL PROTEST X 390 (TWITTER | THE STRIP PODCAST) | ADVOCATE.COM

Lt. Dan Choi, GetEqual cofounder Robin McGehee, and six others have been arrested after stopping traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard to bring attention to congressional inaction to advance the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

The eight protesters stopped traffic on the strip for at least 10 minutes before police officers on bicycles arrived at the scene of the protest. The protesters were carrying a sign that spanned half the length of the street, reading: “Reid: No One Can Do More? GetEqual.org."

Several other protesters formed a picket line and carried signs reading, “I can still be fired for who I am,” and posted a sign on the pedestrian bridge between between MGM and New York, New York casinos thatread, “REID: PASS ENDA NOW! GetEqual.org.”

GetEqual asked its followers last week who should be taken to task for not moving the bill known as ENDA forward. "Our so-called friends in Congress who promised passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act this year have already conceded defeat," the organization says on its website. "It may not be nice and it certainly won’t get us invited to any fancy Washington cocktail parties, but we aren’t going down without a fight! Which Democratic leader do you think GetEqual should hold accountable?"

The four Congress members in question were Sen. Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Barney Frank, and Rep. George Miller — all of whom had expressed their support for enacting ENDA in the past.

@Bob, I am looking at the picture and did an online search for other photos and Lt Choi is not wearing his uniform, his mention by his military designation is just naming him by his title, he is still a member of the forces, and the rule of law that you always trot out doesn't say anywhere that joining the military removes the right to protest peacefully. Another area where the US is marching behind the rest of the world, most western countries already have these protections built in, Canada, the EU, Australia, New Zealand, even South America. When does the US wake up and tell the bible thumpers to stick it and start recognizing basic human rights, your government likes to tell others how to be, but maybe they should clean their own house first, are you a democracy or is that a sham while you are really governed by religous fundamentalist and big business.

This should happen on every street in America until the US Constitution is upheld and people born gay/lesbian have equal civil rights including civil marriage, adoption, and serving openly in the military. Why do we make it so easy for people to take away our constitutional civil rights?

Way to go GetEqual!!! You have my support. At least you guys are in the streets protesting and doing something about this outrage. Where's HRC and PFLAG and the Log Cabin Republicans? WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS??? I've been waiting ever since Anita Bryant began her hate-filled anti-gay campaign way back in 1977 for the passage of a national bill to protect me and the people I love from being fired for being gay. WHY IS THIS TAKING SO GODDAMN LONG???? FOR GOD'S SAKE, GET OFF YOUR ASSES!!!

The Rule of Law should be respected. Especially when it involves a discharged soldier who protests while wearing his uniform.
