After seven rounds of voting, Wisconsin Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus has been named the chairman of the Republican National Committee, picking up momentum after his onetime ally Michael Steele dropped out of the race.

Steele exited the contest and ended his bid for another stint as chair after the fourth round of voting. He threw his support behind former RNC official Maria Cino, but Priebus won with 168 votes.

Last year, while making a bid for the position, Priebus and a few other potential chairs took a meeting with the National Organization for Marriage's Maggie Gallagher to affirm their opposition to marriage equality.

GOProud chair Christopher Barron congratulated Priebus by celebrating the end of Steele's tenure.

"Today is a good day for conservatives and for the Republican Party. The election of Reince Priebus marks the end of Michael Steele's disastrous tenure at the RNC," he said.
