“Ex-Gay” Movement = Genocide?

“Ex-gay” survivor and Advocate contributor Jallen Rix talks about a new study that compares the actions of the reparative therapy movement to genocide.

I am fascinated by the steps people take to go from speaking hateful things about LGBT people to committing hateful and violent acts against the same group. Of course, I see the connection, but I am amazed what enables ordinary people to do horrific things and how their words and beliefs feed into these acts. I am especially sensitive to this topic in terms of the rhetoric and tactics of reparative therapies and “ex-gay ministries” since I fell prey to these cult-like organizations when I first began to deal with my own sexuality. Truly, the things these groups said and taught in the name of “Jesus’ healing” ended up making the vast majority of their participants hate themselves ... often to the extreme of suicide.

This is why I was captivated by Sue E. Spivey and Christine M. Robinson’s new study in the April edition of the journal Genocide Studies and Prevention called “Genocidal Intentions: Social Death and the Ex-Gay Movement.” Not only do they outline word-action connections, but they clearly show how the “ex-gay” movement fits several of the United Nations definitions of genocide, and they do this using the ex-gay leadership’s own words and literature.

Sounds severe? Read on.

When we hear a newscaster use the word “genocide,” we probably know what it means — mass murder, ethnic cleansing, etc. In some ways the downside to this definition is that it is usually used in hindsight. This definition is only useful to define what has already happened without it giving us any predictors to prevent regular people and societies from committing unspeakable acts of violence against a whole group of people.

This is why the U.N.’s definition of genocide is larger than a simple “mass murder” description. The 1948 Untied Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, articles II(b)-(e) outlined a number of ways genocide can be framed for the purpose of prediction and prevention. For example, here are just two points: (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; and (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

Sound familiar?

I believe there are those who would stamp out homosexuals just as other groups of people have been eliminated. The Ex-gay and Reparative Therapy message has been killing souls for years. I know, because I was part of it for many years, and have spent the past few years trying to address the harm that is being done. Every law that is passed that limits our ability to marry or have children is a death sentence. This research is essential and Jallen Rix's book goes a long way in exposing the right wing oppression.

I understand some of the points of view by those making comments, however, cut the author some slack people, he is referencing a study. Sure, The title of this article certainly is sensational, but the actual study uses the term "genocidal intentions." In this light, the ex-gay movement is clearly guilty. Is there doubt in anyone's mind that if they had it their way, everyone would be "cured" of homosexuality, thereby wiping out our existence. This is their world view. It is plainly seen when the American ex-gay leaders suggested to Uganda's government, "Don't kill the homo's, give them to us to cure instead." Either way, the ex-gay movement's goal is to rid the world of homosexuality. Sounds like a kind of genocide to me.

what irks me is these misinformed parents that push and preasure their children into these therapy traps only because it looks good for them and what society should be. it's sad because what their really doing is dealing with their own fear and what people will think about them.SAD REALLY

I along with millions of people have empathy for your anger and frustration with such an absolute BS idea that a person can just wish themselves different or live with guilt because of who they are! But please do not use the same device that main stream media uses to increase anger by linking it to something it has nothing to do with! It really cheapens your cause and pushes away anyone who might otherwise support you. Tony

First off this is NOT genocide! And to say so is just plain irresponsible writing by the author! To take something completely out of context makes you no better than the bible thumping morons! You should be ashamed of yourself! Article II does in fact list what you say, but it also pre-empts the list with the description: “In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy” not hurt a person’s feelings, not to destroy a person’s identity or try to change them. It does not mean to make a person into someone they want them to be or change their views or beliefs! But to DISTROY them (elimination of life)! Over 100,000 blacks were killed in Africa, millions of Jews in Germany for racial cleansing that is the crime of GENOCIDE as outlined in article II! To compare this to some moronic religious reprogramming system is not only wrong, but seriously disrespects the memory of all the people that have been brutally killed!

The Baha'i Faith must be added to the list of religions that advocate gay reparative therapy. Baha'is are good at playing goody goody and putting on a wonderful charming face, while hiding some of their dark secrets from the public's scrutiny. The U.S. Baha'i National Center, the administrative offices of the largest Baha'i denomination who represents their denomination in the United States, is located in Evanston, Illinois. Their administrative body is called "The National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the United States." Are there any news reporters who could contact the Baha'i national affairs office in Washington, DC, to ask them for their comments about gay reparative therapy, and the practice by Baha'i physicians? http://www.bahai.us/contact

What they're doing isn't only genocide. It should be seen as a violent act of war against, perhaps 1/5 of the the human population of the world! It's time to see these people; whether they're Christian, Muslim or whatever background, for who they are. They, their funding organizations and leaders, along with those who are their "hidden" accomplices, MUST be stopped in their tracks.

For years, I have thought the so-called "ex" gay movement was really an evil attempt to convince already weak people that they must change who and what they are or suffer the consequences for making the wrong "choice." Ironic. I know someone personally who attempted to undertake this horrible task and he's never fully recovered from it. He is my partner. It is incredible what happens in these terrible places. I don't buy that their intentions are good. And, when fundamentalist parents shove their kids into "treatment" centers, what they're really doing is sentencing them to prison. Shameful and disgusting all the way around. Is the ex-gay crowd using genocidal language? Hmm. Yeah, I'd say they are. Do they care if that's the characterization? Nope.

I am happy to see this article, because the gay issue is never discussed in terms of genocide, and it should be. For centuries, gay people were imprisoned, tortured, and murdered as a matter of routine, and as we all know this is still going on in many countries. It is high time that our community and in particular our leaders stopped drinking the tolerance kool-aid and started telling it like it is.
