From artist Justin Yoon:
The male figures in my paintings are all one character I created named "Blue Dream." He and the other characters including "Marge" and "Five Pounds (the dog)" are all in a way a imaginative versions of myself and at the same time a romanticized imagined Queer Asian Idols, where people can both relate to and admire from distance. Growing up being inspired by a lot of Americana culture, I was always fascinated with figures such as '70s rock stars or '50s movie stars where I developed this intense relatable feelings along side almost divine like idolatry, where it affected me in a layered way. This emotional experience made me realize nostalgia works in a similar way where small milestone moments life tend be idealized and romanticized over time when you look back at it as it cannot be experienced again as time has passed. I wanted to evoke both of those emotions for the viewers by creating these physically idealized characters in a dreamscape where they are caught in a mundane moment in life.
