Benny and Phish, 2008
Blake Gildaphish needs to be discovered. The characters he has created in his art are desirable and beautifully rendered. He is self-taught —“I thought school was bullshit and they were taking too long to teach me what I enrolled to learn.”
His sense of color is gonzo, and he freely appropriates from his greatest inspirations, Tom of Finland and Harry Bush. We see a little Antonio in there as well.
Most of his training took place in every room of every house he ever lived in. He spent a lot of time buying art books and studying cartoons and comic strips. His father, who is now deceased, was also an illustrator, so it must be in his blood.
It hasn’t been an easy road for Blake: “I've only gotten this good because I forwent having a healthy social life, experimenting with drugs and alcohol in my early teens, and dedicating my time and energy to the people who live in my head.”
We are very happy to introduce those people who live in Blake’s head to a whole new audience.
