Variety reports that Six Feet Under, the new HBO comedy by gay writer Alan Ball (American Beauty), had the largest viewership of any HBO original series debut, outpacing even the debut of The Sopranos in 1999. Almost 4 million households tuned in last Sunday to check out the mordant humor of a series set in a funeral parlor that is run by a decidedly repressed gay character.
