Former Advocate columnist Norah Vincent discusses her hit book Self-made Man on Friday, January 20, on ABC's 20/20. Vincent's book, which hits bookstores on Friday, is her personal recounting of the 18 months she spent living undercover as a man. Her gender venture began one night when she dressed in boy drag for fun and realized that she could pass as male. She developed a male persona--Ned--and, as Ned, did everything from dating to job interviews to bowling with the boys. In the end, however, she found that being Ned was seriously upsetting her equilibrium as a woman. In an upcoming Advocate interview, Vincent says: "Gender identity runs very deep in all of us...and messing with it can have dire consequences."
Vincent is also scheduled to appear on a number of other TV and radio talk shows the week of January 23:
