13 LGBTQ+ TV Shows and Movies to Watch in September
Even with the Hollywood actors and writers strike going on, there are still some great films and TV shows coming your way this fall. Here are some of the LGBTQ+ movies and television shows that will premiere this September.
The Wheel of Time – September 1
In 2021, Amazon Prime Video premiered a television adaptation of the fantasy novel series The Wheel of Time, which was written by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. The second-season of this LGBTQ-inclusive and feminist series returned to Amazon Prime on September 1, and has already been renewed for a third season.
Perpetrator – September 1
Queer horror films are having a moment this year, which leaves us all with more than enough choices for movies to watch during the spooky season. After its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, Perpetrator, which follows a teenage girl who lives in a town where young women are going missing, is available to stream on Shudder.
Never Let Him Go – September 6
This month, a new true-crime documentary series explores LGBTQ+ hate crimes in Australia, with Never Let Him Go, a four-part docuseries about a gay man who was killed in a hate crime in Australia in 1988. The seriesfollows Steve Johnson, as he tries to find out what happened to his brother, Scott. Never Let Him Go premiered on Hulu on September 6.
My Animal – September 8
At just 24 years old, Amandla Stenberg has had an incredible career. This fall, they will star in My Animal, a supernatural horror film about a queer teen werewolf who falls for a tormented figure skater, played by Stenberg. My Animal premieres in theaters on September 8 and will be digitally released on September 15.
Rotting in the Sun – September 8
Sebastián Silva’s Rotting in The Sun made headlines when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival for its inclusion of graphic, unsimulated gay sex. Silva, who co-wrote and directed the film, stars in the film as a version of himself, as he falls for social media influencer Jordan Firstman, who also plays a version of himself. Rotting in The Sun will be released in theaters on September 8 and will be digitally released on Muni on September 15.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe – September 8
In 2012, author Benjamin Alire Sáenz published Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, a queer YA novel about two Mexican-American teenage boys that went on to win the 2013 Stonewall Book Award for LGBT Fiction. A decade later, the book was adapted into a film, which premiered at the International Toronto Film Festival in September 2022. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe hits U.S. theaters on September 8.
The Other Black Girl – September 13
In 2021, Zakiya Dalila Harris’ published her debut novel, The Other Black Girl, which centers around the only Black employee at a publishing house in New York City, who begins to receive anonymous notes telling her to leave the company. The show has been adapted for television and features queer characters and a star-studded cast including Bellamy Young (Scandal) and Erin McCormack (Will & Grace). The Other Black Girl premieres on Hulu on September 13.
The Morning Show – September 13
Season 1 of The Morning Show was top-notch dramatic television, but the show surpassed my wildest dreams in season 2 when it included a sapphic storyline. Season 3 of this workplace drama about sexual misconduct in the newsroom returns on Apple TV on September 13 and will feature queer talent like Natalie Morales and Tig Notaro.
Theater Camp – September 14
I can’t remember the last time I laughed out loud as much as I did when I saw the mockumentary comedy Theater Camp in theaters this past July. This LGBTQ-inclusive film stars Ben Platt, Molly Gordon, and Noah Galvin as the staff of a kids’ theater camp in upstate New York, and follows their journey to save the camp from being destroyed. Theater Camp will be released on Hulu on September 14.
Cassandro – September 15
Earlier this year, Cassandro premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. This biographical film centers around gay wrestler Saúl Armendáriz, who competed as a professional wrestler in Mexico before taking on the role of Cassandro, an “exótico” who fights in drag. Cassandro will be released in theaters on September 15 and will be begin streaming on Amazon Prime on September 22.
American Horror Story: Delicate – September 20
This season of American Horror Story is all about spiders and pregnancy, and is based on the book Delicate Condition by Danielle Valentine. Notably, this season of American Horror Story will feature Kim Kardashian, along with LGBTQ+ cast members like Cara Delevingne, Zachary Quinto, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez. American Horror Story: Delicate premieres on FX on September 20 and on Hulu the next day.
Sex Education – September 21
If you’re looking to fill a Heartstopper-sized hole in your heart, I might suggest its raunchier counterpart, Sex Education, a British teen comedy with a large cast of queer characters. Gillian Anderson stars in the show as sex therapist Jean Milburn, whose son Otis starts a sex clinic at his high school. The fourth and final season of Sex Education premieres on Netflix on September 21.
Dicks: The Musical – September 29
In Dicks: The Musical, gay comedians Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharper star as long-lost identical twins who seek to reunite their divorced parents, almost like The Parent Trap. The film also stars queer icons Megan Thee Stallion, Nathan Lane, Megan Mullally, and Bowen Yang. Dicks: The Musical will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, followed by a U.S. release on September 29.
