The (Many) Queer Moments of the 2019 Grammy Awards
The (Many) Queer Moments of the 2019 Grammy Awards
It was officially the year of queer women at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Brandi Carlile and Lady Gaga both made history as the first out winners in their categories (Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Performance for Carlile, and Best Pop Solo Performance for Gaga). These singers, along with queer nominees Janelle Monae and St. Vincent, rocked the ceremony with their performances and brought the voices of queer women to the viewers of network television.
" LGBTQ women like Brandi Carlile, Janelle Monae, St. Vincent, and Lady Gaga took center stage tonight at the Grammy Awards in an unprecedented and inspiring way," said Sarah Kate Ellis, president of GLAAD. "This year's out winners not only entertain the masses with their talents, but also use art to educate the masses and empower queer youth everywhere. The Recording Academy is making good on their commitment to include diverse artists and tonight's awards should be a signal to the entire music industry that audiences and critics alike celebrate LGBTQ musicians. "
In fact, the Grammys were full of many queer moments -- be they the performances from the nominees or divas like Dolly Parton and Diana Ross. Take a look below.

Parton, who was honored at the Grammys, was joined by Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Little Big Town, and her goddaughter Miley Cyrus.
Lady Gaga sings both the male and female parts of “Shallow.”
