Sir Ian McKellen among nominees for 74th annual Academy Awards
Out actor Sir Ian McKellen received an Academy Award nomination on Tuesday morning for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gandalf the Grey in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 13 nominations the film received overall. The musical romance Moulin Rouge and the John Forbes Nash Jr. biopic A Beautiful Mind each received eight nominations, despite the controversy in some quarters over the fact that Mind leaves out Nash's alleged bisexuality, which was touched upon in Sylvia Nasar's biography. (Out costume designer Angus Strathie was among Moulin's nominees.) Robert Altman's gay-inclusive murder mystery Gosford Park took seven nominations, including Best Picture, and the family drama In the Bedroom received five. Dame Judi Dench received a Best Actress nomination and Kate Winslet received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for their portrayals of bisexual novelist Iris Murdoch in Iris. The 74th annual Academy Awards will be presented on March 24 in Los Angeles.
