A Christian
conservative group in West Virginia is likening gay marriage
supporters to snipers targeting "traditional"
families in a new video campaign to enact a constitutional
amendment banning marriage equality.
The Family Policy
Council of West Virginia is urging legislators to allow a
ballot measure for their proposed amendment, according to WHSV
News in Charleston.
The video says that
marriage equality would threaten churches' livelihood,
thereby preventing them from offering services like adoption,
medical care, and religious schools.
The potential for a
West Virginian couple to marry in another state where the right
is extended to gay and lesbian couples would lead West
Virginians into "legal chaos," the ad's narrator
warns. The video includes a family blowing bubbles together in
the cross hairs of a rifle, driving home the point of
heterosexual families being targeted.
"A weekend trip to
San Francisco for a West Virginia same-sex couple plus a pro
bono [American Civil Liberties Union] attorney could easily
become a nightmare for marriage in West Virginia," the
video says. (Michelle Garcia, Advocate.com)
