Congressional hearings on repealing the military's ban on openly gay service members have been postponed until 2010.

Sen. Carl Levin, a Democrat, told C-SPAN that an investigation for the Fort Hood Soldier Readiness Center shooting on November 5 must be the top priority for the Senate Armed Services Committee. The program will air on C-SPAN on Sunday, according to the Navy Times.

Levin said that the vote on "don't ask, don't tell" would most likely take place when Congress considers the 2011 defense budget, whether or not the hearing was postponed.

He added that the policy would have to be changed with a "careful review" of military attitudes, to assess what the armed forces would need to adjust to the change. Levin, chair of the Armed Services Committee, said he has met with Defense secretary Robert Gates and Joints Chiefs of Staff chairman Adm. Mike Mullen on repealing the ban.
