Irish LGBT Activists Civil Unions Arent Enough

LGBT activists in Ireland are opposing the country's proposed civil unions bill because they say it doesn't do enough to protect children and characterizes gays and lesbians as second-class citizens.

"The bill is clearly a stepping stone but does not go far enough," political commentator and election adviser Robert Cassidy said in a statement. "It has failed to address the rights of the child within a civil partnership as described with the bill and that is a major flaw."

MarrigEquality director Moninne Griffith takes her opposition to the proposed bill a step further.

"Civil partnership without the option to marry sends a clear message out to the public that the government do not consider gay and lesbian relationships to be equal," she says.
