Caprica, the show set 58 years before Battlestar Galactica, the cult hit on which Caprica is based, will premiere Friday at 9 p.m. on Syfy.

Executive producer Remi Aubuchon described the show as "television's first science fiction family saga." The series depicts the genesis of the genocidal Cylons and why they hate humans..

According to AfterElton.com, Sam Adama, brother to main character Joseph Adama, is married and gay -- a first for the Battlestar Galactica universe. However, executive producer Jennifer Espenson said gay is not a word Caprica will use.

"Why do you have to have a different word for who they fall in love with?" Espenson asked on AfterElton.com. "Having a different word for a same-sex relationship struck me as something this culture wouldn't have thought of since those relationships were just considered on a par and unremarkable."

The science fiction epic also features a bisexual female character, Sister Clarice Willow (Polly Walker).
