Many rumors and conspiracy theories have been floated around about John Lennon over the years, including an alleged affair with Beatles manager Brian Epstein. In his new book, Lennon Revealed, reporter and longtime friend Larry Kane tells the story behind the rumors, and asks those closest to John if they think the story has any validity.
"I don't think it ever happened. I think it is furious, pure bullshit," a former assistant to Epstein, whom insiders called "quietly gay," tells Kane in the book. But others, including Beatles publicist Tony Barrow, don't offer a definitive no.
"John was daring, ever blunt, so determined to be different. I would never say, 'never.'"
Others quoted in the book note that at the time the two would have been starting up an affair, homosexuality was still illegal in London, and people kept their same-sex relationships hush-hush.
