Chris Hughes, a cofounder of Facebook and chief digital organizer for Barack Obama's presidential campaign, launched a new venture today -- Jumo.com -- which aims to use social networking tools to connect people to the nonprofit causes and charities important to them.

The Advocate interviewed Hughes about his plans for the site earlier this year. Today, as it launches, Hughes tells The New York Times that Jumo.com will "do what Yelp did for restaurants" and extend it to charities "to help people find an evaluate them."

Jumo has profile pages for various charities, and users can follow those pages, where relevant news articles and videos about the individual charity's work will be posted. Users can also utilize the site to learn more about the causes and interests their friends follow.

"The more connected that individual is to an issue they care about, the higher probability there is they will stay involved over a longer period of time," Hughes told the Times.

The Jumo launch comes just a day after Hughes and his partner, Sean Eldridge, announced there are matching donations until the end of the year to gay rights causes Freedom to Marry, Empire State Pride Agenda, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, and Equality Maryland.
