The California Supreme Court will meet in closed session Wednesday to review a request from the U.S. ninth circuit court of appeals to determine whether Proposition 8 supporters have legal standing to defend the ban on same-sex marriage.
According to the Los Angeles Times, "Depending on the court's ruling, the 9th Circuit could either dismiss the Proposition 8 appeal on procedural grounds -- limiting the case's effect to California -- or rule on federal constitutional questions that would affect same-sex marriage throughout the country."
In August, a federal judge struck down the marriage ban, and then state officials refused to appeal the ruling. The question remains whether Prop. 8 backers ProtectMarriage.com have legal standing to challenge ruling.
