At a promotional event for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows --- Part 2 in New York over the weekend, David Thewlis, who plays Professor Lupin in the Harry Potter films, says he originally thought his character was gay and played him that way without the consent of creator J.K. Rowling.
Thewlis says Alfonso Cuaron, who directed Thewlis in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban -- his first appearance in the series -- told the actor to play Lupin as a "gay junkie," according to Moviefone.
The actor had yet to read all of the books and was unaware his interpretation would be proved false by Rowling, who later wrote Lupin a romance with Nymphadora Tonks. He says after finding that out, he had to change his approach to the character in subsequent films.
In 2007, Rowling made headlines when she revealed Professor Dumbledore was gay. "I always thought of Dumbledore as gay," Rowling revealed to a standing ovation at Carnegie Hall. "If I had known it would make you so happy, I would have announced it years ago."
