In director Kevin's Smith new horror movie, the lead psychopath's character appears based on infamous pastor Fred Phelps. And now the Westboro Baptist Church leader is planning -- of course -- a Westboro-style protest of the movie's release.
TMZreports that they promise to disrupt the release of Red State, in which religious fundamentalists set out to kill sinners, especially the gays. A Westboro spokesperson reasoned, "God hates fags, God hates fag enablers, therefore God hates Kevin Smith."
But Smith just disagrees.
"Well Jesus told ME he loved 'Red State,'" Smith told TMZ. "He said it makes up for 'Cop Out.' He also said neither He nor His Heavenly Father have any affiliation with the Westboro Baptist Church."
If you want to judge for yourself, Red State is already available on video on demand and will hit select theaters this month. Watch the trailer below to get an idea what might be bothering Phelps. And look for The Advocate's interview with Smith in the October issue.
