LGBT-themed indie films made a strong showing with Gotham Awards voters, with nominations going to Beginners, Gun Hill Road, and Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same, reports Deadline.
Beginners director Mike Mills used his late father's coming out story as inspiration for his hit film and garnered two nominations, one for Best Feature and the other for Best Ensemble, which includes Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor.
Newcomer Harmony Santana is in the running for Breakthrough Actor for her work as a transgender teenager in the searing drama Gun Hill Road. Newly out Zachary Quinto is among the nominees for Best Ensemble for his work in the suspenseful financial crisis tale, Margin Call.
Director-producer Madeleine Olnek and co-producer Laura Terruso have their romantic comedy Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same vying to win the award for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.
There's also Bill Cunningham New York, a portrait of the famed fashion photographer, which is nominated as Best Documentary. We're not sure if Cunningham is gay, as the 80-year-old bachelor circumvents answering the question.
"The high caliber of this year's Gotham Awards nominees' work is truly remarkable," said Joana Vicente, Executive Director of Independent Film Project. "This extraordinary group of filmmakers and talent, both established and new, are breaking barriers and finding fresh, innovative ways to engage audiences through unique storytelling. We're passionate about shedding light on well deserved independent cinema and excited to begin what is sure to be a momentous awards season."
The 21st Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards will be presented November 28 at Cipriani Wall Street.
