ACLU Freedom to Be Monument on the National Mall, Trans Pride Festival, Washington, D.C. 2025Nikki Aye for The AdvocateOver the weekend, WorldPride started with D.C.'s Trans Pride, a weekend of events dedicated to and organized by the trans community.
The American Civil Liberties Union organized during the weekend a massive symbol of trans visibility and justice in its Freedom to Be Monument. A sprawling installation of over 200 quilt panels, the exhibition stood over the weekend. It's both a love letter to trans life and a roaring act of defiance, made visible at the foot of the Capitol just as the Trump administration ramps up its campaign to erase LGBTQ+ existence from public life.
“This isn’t meant to just be abstract,” said Gillian Branstetter, the ACLU spokesperson who spearheaded the project. “It’s meant to make a lot of that work we are doing in communities, state houses, from the Supreme Court and the White House to Congress—visible.”
At the monument, ACLU attorney Chase Strangio told the crowd, "We are going to fight for and build a future that is better for those that come after us. Whatever happens in these buildings, Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court, remember that we have the power to keep fighting."
Besides the monument, Trans Pride featured a conference covering everything from medical transitioning to ID doc information. The conference also featured a keynote talk from trans athlete and author Schuyler Bailar.
