Even Fox News is boycotting, but an LGBTQ+ outlet is still covering the White House pool

While TV outlets including Fox News are boycotting White House press pool events in solidarity with CNN, The Washington Blade, a D.C.-based LGBTQ+ outlet, continued Monday to provide print press pool coverage of President Donald Trump.

All television media outlets in the White House TV press pool refused to provide pool coverage on Monday, a day CNN was scheduled to provide video feeds and send reporters to any Trump events. That move came after Trump stripped CNN, MS Now and Politico of press credentials over the weekend because he was angered by their coverage.

The five outlets who share TV pool duty issued a joint statement on the decision. “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting,” that statement reads. Notably, Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Jacqui Heinrich serves as the current White House Correspondents’ Association president.

But the same day TV outlets showed solidarity, other outlets continued to participating in other pools, including the print pool of which Politico is a member.

On Monday, The Washington Blade, an LGBTQ+ newspaper founded in 1969, was serving as the primary print pool provider with reporter Joe Reberkenny sending the primary dispatches about Trump’s activity throughout the day. That included updates from a ribbon-cutting for the White House helipad.

The secondary print outlet in the pool on Monday was The Daily Caller, a conservative outlet sympathetic to Trump. Ironically, that outlet shared duties with a professional from the Blade, an outlet highly critical of Trump’s attacks on LGBTQ+ rights since his return to power in Washington, D.C.

The Advocate reached out to The Washington Blade editor Kevin Naff for comment on the decision to participate in the print pool, as well as The Daily Caller, but has not yet received a response. A request for comment to Reberkenny was referred to Naff.

Notably, the White House in hosting the pool dispatches included a defense of its decision to block outlets in an extensive post titled “White House Access is a privilege — not a right.”

“Last week, President Donald J. Trump removed CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House grounds after years of false reporting. The First Amendment protects their right to publish; it does not entitle them to a hard pass, briefing room seat, or place in the press pool,” the post reads. “Access changes are nothing new. What is new, however, is the sudden claim that it becomes sacred only when the outlets are friendly to the Radical Left. The rule was never ‘every outlet gets in.’ It was always ‘our side stays in.’”

The post goes on to single out times when the Obama and Biden White Houses restricted access to conservative outlets, though nothing listed would compare in scale to the ban of CNN, MS Now, and Politico.
